Implementation

Much of the research conducted by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Signs and Markings Program is implemented through changes or additions to state, national, and international documents such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and ASTM standards and specifications.

The following are examples of the standards developed by TTI Visibility Research.

FHWA Retro Tool Kit

FHWA Retroreflectivity Sign Sheeting ID Guide

TxDOT Sign Crew Field Book

MUTCD — Interim Approval for Use of Clearview Font for Positive Contrast Legends on Guide Signs

MUTCD — New sign minimum retroreflectivity levels

ASTM — 10 Standard Practice for Evaluating Retroreflective Pavement Markings Using Portable Hand-Operated Instruments

AASHTO M 268-10 — Standard Specification for Retroreflective Sheeting for Traffic Control

TxDOT — Mobile Retroreflectivity Data Collection for Pavement Markings, Special Specification SS6629 and its current version SS8094.

TxDOT — Special Specification 8251 Reflectorized Pavement Markings with Retroreflective Requirements

Research conducted by TTI has also been used to modify standards for:

  • ASTM E2177,
  • ASTM E2176,
  • ASTM E1709,
  • ASTM E1710,
  • ASTM E2176, and
  • ASTM E2177

as well as many others.
